A Study on Serum Prolactin Levels of Cord Blood in Normal newborn I fant

Abstract
This study was undertaken to investigate the concentration of prolactin in the umbilical ve ous blood and the maternal venous blood at delivery. Blood samples from 20 normal newborn infants and 20 normal pregnancies were assayed for prolactin levels by the method of radioimmunoassay, using Abbott Prolactin RIABEAD II Diagnostic Kit (Abbott Laboratories, Diagnostic Division, USA).
The following results were obtained;
1. The mean serum prolactin levels of card blood in 20 cases of normal newborn infants were A5.0¡¾85.5 ng/ml and those of 20 maternal blood were 245.9 ¡¾ 74.4 ng/ml. In comparison with the newborn and the mother, the serum prolactin levels of the newborn were slightly higher than those of , e mother. However statistically not sinificant (p>0.1).
2. The mean serum prolactin levels of cord blood in 11 normal male newborn infants were 253.6¡¾ 97.7 ng/ml and those of 9 normal female newborn infants were 310.7¡¾68.2 ng/ml. In compa ¢¥son with male and female newborn infant, the serum prolactin levels of the female newborn infant re higher than those of the male newborn infant. However statistically not significant (p>01).
3. The correlation between serum prolatin levels of cord blood and maternal blood were found to be insignificant.
